View an ASL Message from the Presenters

Designed to prepare educational professionals and interpreters working in K–12 classrooms for the challenging task of conveying complex scientific information rapidly and accurately in ASL by enhancing their science ASL skills and cognitive processing of scientific information. Topics include features of academic ASL, development of science signs, strategies for effective communication and instructional delivery of science-specific vocabulary terms, phrases and topic contexts, and how to use the newly developed ASL STEM library resource, the ASL Clear, funded by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The participants will:

·        Be able to list the elements of academic ASL

·        Be able to discuss the process of developing science signs and delivering technical concepts in an engaging, accurate manner

·        Be able to analyze and decipher the meaning and context of science signs in video materials

·        Practice expressing various science topics in ASL for effective instructional delivery and communication of science content
